List of Taekwondo techniques

Taekwondo techniques vary between schools and level and not all techniques are included. Techniques often combined into longer set forms, again these vary from school to school.

Attention Stance

Attention, or more properly, Charyeot, is a stance where your body is in an upright standing position with the legs side by side, heels touching, toes slightly apart. Your hands should be parallel with your body, to the side. From this stance instructors explain what will be taught during the class session and/or if they want your attention they say Charyeot, meaning you stop whatever you are doing and get into the stance awaiting further instructions.

Closed Stance

Moa Sogi means the feet are parallel and close together. It can be side facing or front facing to your opponent. It is used to simulate the practitioner being restrained, i.e. where the arms are in front of the practitioners face with one fist covered by the opposite hand. The opening movements of won hyo tul are a prime example of this where the practitioner starts off in moa sogi and then bursts out of their attackers grasp with a twin forearm block.

Walking Stance

Gunnun Sogi or Ahp sogi is used to approach or retreat in combat and poomsae. Feet should be maintained shoulder width apart except when stepping, where the leading foot moves outwards marginally. To maintain a solid base, each step should put about a shoulder width between feet, and the stance should be a shoulder width-and-a-half long. When stopping in the middle of a step, the back foot should be inclined outwards slightly to aid balance.

Back L-Stance

Niunja Sogi (Back Stance: Dwi-gibi Sogi) is a standard fight stance used in Taekwondo to prepare for kicking. The body is turned to present only the side to the opponent and the legs are split one and a half shoulder widths apart. The front foot points directly forwards while the back leg is turned out just under 90 degrees. The feet are lined up along the heels. To make sure you have the L-stance properly aligned, stand with your feet together, turn out the toes and step the back foot directly backwards into the stance. 70% of the weight should be on the back leg which means the front leg can be engaged in quick kicking and it will not unbalance the practitioner if swept.

Parallel Stance

Naranhi Sogi is a neutral stance from where a variety of Taekwondo kicks and punches may be thrown. The feet are both pointed forward and placed shoulder width apart. Arms are lightly bent with the clenched fist just under the navel and the muscles of the body should be lightly relaxed, ready to spring into action at any moment. This position is also often referred to as Ready Stance or Chumbi sogi.

Rear Foot Stance

Dwit Bal Sogi or Bum sogi is sometimes known as Cat Stance or Tiger Stance in Taekwondo. It is like the L-Stance but much tighter, and the feet are slightly over head width apart. Again most of the weight is placed on the back foot(90/10), leaving the front leg ready to kick.

Sitting Stance

Annun Sogi or Joo-choom sogi is a low stance used in Taekwondo and several other martial arts as a neutral position, which also enables an individual to practice punching. It is known as the 'horse-stance'.
Feet are placed wide, around two shoulder widths apart and the knees are deeply bent until the hamstrings lie parallel with the floor. The back is kept straight. Arms are bent with closed, upturned fists held at the hips. As each punch is directed forward, the fist swivels 180 degrees down to a natural position before impact, turning back up again as it is retracted to the sides.
This is a very arduous position for the legs and lower back. While punches are being trained, other parts of the body are receiving a workout. As a student progresses, his hips will begin to open up and he will be able to achieve an even lower stance. Tests of martial endurance are often based around maintaining this position for protracted periods, holding other objects on outstretched arms or even balancing them on the head.

Fighting Stance

Kyorugi joonbi is a simple stance which is similar to back stance, but with the practitioners weight center to allow for kicking with either front or back foot. It largely resembles the fighting stance a boxer will take.

Hand attacks

Taekwondo hand strikes are performed as a close distance alternative to kicks. They are executed in a number of ways - from standing, jumping, spinning and rushing forwards. Hand strikes make up fast combinations of strikes which can leave an opponent stunned and unable to defend himself. Taekwondo hand strikes can be separated into two distinct styles:
  • Closed hand strikes (jireugi)
  • Open hand techniques (chigi)
Various surfaces of the hand may be engaged as the striking surface depending on which area of the opponents body which is being targeted. This leads to a large array of hand positions.
  • Forefist - A closed fist may be jabbed out directly to strike with the forefist knuckles. This is a suitable position for general punches to soft areas of the body. Without protection, it is inadvisable to strike the bony face as fingers are likely to get broken on the hard temple and jaw bones.
  • Hammer fist - A closed fist may be brought down in a hammering motion to strike with the underneath. Such a strike can obliterate an opponent's nose, making it near impossible for him to retaliate.
  • Backfist - A Son Deung clenched hand is swung backwards into the face of an opponent. The back of the hand makes contact and the momentum garnered in the swing makes this a powerful strike. Spinning backfists are a knockout punch and banned in most Taekwondo competitions.
  • Knife Hand - 'Sonkal' is the Taekwondo name for a 'Karate Chop', i.e. where an open hand is hammered down to make impact with the underside. A Ridge Hand is the opposite, where the top of the open hand strikes. These are commonly made to the side of the neck.
  • Fingertips - Jumeok can be used to strike vulnerable areas of the body such as pressure points. Used in self-defence and not competition sparring, one and two finger strikes are made to the eyeballs. Four finger strikes engaging the tips of the outstretched hand (known as Spear hand) can be made to vital points in the neck.
  • Thumb - Eomji is a fist with the thumb protruding over the top. This is a formidable weapon in pressure point striking. Vulnerable areas can be targeted all over the body such as the sternum, the spaces in between the ribs and other nerve clusters.
  • Palm Heel - a classic self-defence strike where the hand is pulled back to engage the base of the palm in an upwards thrusting strike. This is particularly dangerous if applied to the base of the nose or chin and can result in death. Obviously banned in competition Taekwondo.
  • Elbow Strike (palgup chigi)- Forearm is folded inwards towards the body and the strike is delivered with the outside of the forearm or elbow.
  • Four-knuckle strike - This is a fist shape particular to the Asian martial arts. Instead of closing the fist completely, the fingers are held out and only the knuckles are bent, thereby presenting the upper set of knuckles as the striking surface. This fist is used for breaking boards as the smaller surface area concentrates the punches power. In self-defence, it may be used to purposefully break an attacker's jaw.
  • Eagle strike - In this strike, the fingers all touch together, and the hand is pointed down, exposing the top of the wrist,which is then swung upward to strike the underside of the jaw. If done properly, this strike can easily fracture the jawbone, and is usually banned from competitions due to the extreme danger. If done improperly, however, the practitioner may well break his wrist.
  • Tiger Claw - A strike using the space between the index finger and thumb. Fingers are made rigid, and the attack is usually directed towards the neck/trachea. Serves as a way to incapacitate an opponent for a few seconds.
Tae Kwon Do also makes use of reverse and front elbow strikes.

Kicks (Chagi)

All kicks can be executed as jump kicks, spin kicks, jump spin kicks or multi-rotational spin kicks. Also, all can be performed by the front or rear leg in a given stance.
Some of the best-known Taekwondo kicks include:
  • Front Snap Kick (앞 차기 ap chagi): This is a very linear kick. The practitioner raises the knee to the waist, pulls the toes back and quickly extends the foot at the target. It is also known as the snap kick. The front kick is one of the first kicks learned in TKD; if mastered it can become one of the most powerful. This technique is more meant to be used to push the attacker away, but can injure.
  • Side Thrusting Kick (옆 차기 yeop chagi): A very powerful kick, first the practitioner simultaneously raises the knee and rotates the body 90 degrees, while doing that they extend their leg. In WTF style taekwondo, this technique should strike with the outside edge of the foot, though using the heel may provide more force if used in sparring.
  • Roundhouse Kick Turning Kick or Round Kick (돌려 차기 dollyeo chagi): The practitioner raises the knee, turns the hips, pivots on the non-kicking foot, and snaps the kick horizontally into the target at a 80 to 90-degree angle, either with the instep or with the ball of the foot (in the latter case, with the toes pulled back out of the way as in a front kick). The latter technique requires a great deal of flexibility in the heel.
  • Back kick\horse kick (뒷 차기 dwit chagi): Here the practitioner turns the body away from the target and pushes the back leg straight toward the target, hitting it with the heel while watching over the shoulder. The turning motion helps to give this kick a lot of power. Without proper care, you can "spin out" and lose your balance from using this attack.
  • Reverse Side Kick A.K.A. Spinning Side Kick (반대 옆 차기 bandae yeop chagi): Similar to the back kick, here the body turns further, allowing the heel to hit the target with the foot pointing to the side as in a regular side kick, instead of more downward as in a true back kick.
  • Hook Kick (후려 차기 huryeo chagi): A less popular kick traditionally, it has found increasing favor in modern competitions. The practitioner raises the knee in a fashion similar to the roundhouse kick, then extends the foot outward then snaps it around in a dorsal arc, with the heel as the intended striking weapon.
  • Axe Kick/Downward kick (내려 차기 naeryeo chagi): Another kick that has increased in popularity due to sparring competitions. The leg is raised usually from the outside of the body like an outside crescent kick. then the leg is pulled down with the heel pointed downward. It is typically targeted toward the head, shoulder, or chest and requires significant flexibility to employ effectively. This kick is best used against the collar bone, which can readily break from this attack. the setup in the initial raise of the kick can also be done from the inside, or middle (straight up and down.)
  • Crescent Kick (an chagi/bakkat chagi): There are two variations of this kick: the outer crescent and the inner crescent. In the outer, the practitioner raises the extended leg as high as possible, and slightly up across the body, (a bit across the centerline of the body), then sweeping outward to the side, in a circular movement. In the inner, the motions are the same but the direction of the kick changes, this time originating from the outside of the body, heading towards the inside, or centerline of the body. These kicks are also called "Inside Kick" and "Outside Kick" at some taekwondo schools, and "Inside-Outside" and "Outside-Inside" at others.
  • Spin Kicks (반대 돌려 차기 bandae dollyeo chagi): There are several spinning kicks that involve the rotation of the entire body and head before the kick is released. Spinning kicks include the back pivot kick (dweel chagi), spinning hook kick (dweel huryeo chagi), spinning axe kick, butterfly kick, returning kick, 360 turning kick, and a number of other kicks of varying popularity.
  • Tornado kick/360 kick/Screw kick/windmill kick (on mondollyo chagi):The exponent steps forward then spins in the direction of their back leg while raising their knee and jumping to perform a spinning inside crescent kick in midair. the alternate version involve an initial round or crescent kick, while the back foot pivots. rotating the body in a 360 motion, the back foot comes up as a knee and swings across giving the momentum for your attacking leg to do a roundhouse kick or an inside crescent kick.
  • Jump Kicks (뛰어 차기 ttwieo chagi):

There are also many kicks that involve jumping before their execution. These include jumping front kick (ee dan ap chagi), jumping side kick (이단 옆 차기 idan yeop chagi), flying side kick, jumping axe kick, jumping roundhouse (ee dan dollyeo chagi), jumping spinning hook kick, jumping spinning roundhouse kick, butterfly kick or "shuffle jump kick," jumping (or counter) back kick, and jump spinning side kick. Normally, jumping kicks involve pulling up the back leg to help gain height during the jump and then performing the kick itself with the front leg. About any kick can be put into a Jump, a spin, or a jump-spin. flying kicks, obvious for the name, fly in a forward motion, rather than jumping straight up and down like a jump kick. first, for a flying kick, you must run ( your kicking leg must be last foot to run) and run-jump into the air doing the kick you want. usually, the side peircing kick is preferred as a flying move.
  • Advanced Kicks : There are a variety of kicks that can be used in combination or stem out from a simple kick to create more difficult ones. Some of these include 540 Kick (One spins 1½ times in mid-air and does a kick, usually a back spinning hook kick) and Triple Aero Kicks (One does round house kick, back spinning hook kick, and another round house kick in mid-air).
  • Fast Kicks: Also, many kicks can be employed using a fast kick style. The practitioner shuffles the back leg forward to the front leg, and the front leg comes up and kicks closer to the enemy than the practitioner had been before execution. This can be used with side kick, roundhouse kick, front kick, hook kick, and axe kick.

Blocks (Makgi)

Taekwondo blocks known as Makgi are used to stop and deflect an incoming attack. They engage various parts of the arm with the hand and are held in different positions such as knife-hand, closed fist etc. Each block is suitable for a particular kind of attack and may be combined with another punch or kick to make a counter-attack.
  • Single Forearm Block - Wae Sun Palmok is used to deflect an attack (usually a kick) made at the torso. Starting up near the opposite shoulder,and the leading hand is projected down and across the body to deflect the kick with the forearm.
  • Low Block - Najundi Makgi is used to defend against low attacks to the torso or legs. This is one of the most basic Taekwondo blocks and one of the first things a beginner will learn. The lead forearm is bent and raised to shoulder height, snapping the arm down straight with the palm facing the ground, which blocks any incoming low kicks.
  • Rising Block - Chookya Makgi is another basic Taekwondo block, used to defend against overhead attacks to the head and shoulders. The arm is bent and raised above the head, and the underside of the forearm absorbs the impact of the blow, which may be painful but is better than it connecting with your head or delicate clavicle. This block is used to defend against Hammerfists, Axe Kicks and overhead strikes with blunt instruments.
  • Palm Block - Sonbadak Naeryo Makgi is a standard block used to deflect incoming kicks and punches. The open hand is raised up to shoulder height and thrust directly down to meet the attackers limb. The heel of the hand makes contact with the attacker’s forearm in case of a punch, or shin in case of a kick. Although simple, it requires a lot of partner training to get the timing of this Taekwondo block correct.
  • Knife Hand Block - The hand is kept in a knife hand position to block attacks to the torso. As the front arms sweeps down in an arc from the inside to the outside of the body, the back hand is simultaneously pulled back to the back hip and ready for a counter punch.
  • Double Forearm Block - This is a more advanced Taekwondo block, designed to be used against a strong attack to the center of the body. Standing sideways, the lead forearm blocks the attack with the fist closed. The second arm provides further support, linking into the crook of the arm so both forearms are at a 90 degree angle to the body.
  • Double Knife Hand Block - With the hands held open in the knife hand position, a powerful kick aimed at the solar plexus can be successfully blocked. Both hands come across the body, intersecting at the forearms and providing a firm defence.
  • Nine Block - This is a black belt leveled block and the first time it is usually used is around the black belt form.The person blocks their chest with one hand and stomach region with the other.The shape of the block forms a number nine when executed correctly.Both arms are bent at a 45 degree angle as well and it leaves little space open in the mid region of the defenders body.Your hand when this move is executed correctly should also be above your groin on the bottom and next to you opposite shoulder with the top hand.

Patterns, Poomsae, Hyung, Tul

Taekwondo patterns, also known as poomsae or hyeong constitute an important part of Taekwondo competitions.[1] A pattern is a series of movements linked together in a prescribed sequence. Both basic and advanced Taekwondo techniques can be contained within a single patterns and the higher the level of the competitor, the greater the difficulty of the techniques and the complexity of the pattern. Competitors must perform their highest pattern in front of a panel of judges.
There are two types of Taekwondo pattern competition:
  • Solo Taekwondo patterns - Performed simultaneously by two competitors, each from an opposing club. Every competitor may perform two patterns chosen from a range corresponding to his level - one designated pattern and one optional pattern. The best pattern is chosen by the judges and that competitor goes through to the next round by a process of elimination.
  • Team Taekwondo patterns - Performed simultaneously by several competitors from a club organised into a single team. Club teams compete by performing two patterns each, one after the other. Once one team have finished both their patterns can the competing team then perform theirs. Again, the judges choose the best pattern to go through to the next round.
  • Accuracy. TaeGeuk patterns should begin and end in the same place.
  • Posture. Practitioners must have their body weight correctly distributed during each different stance and during footwork. Each technique must be correctly aligned.
  • Realism. Taekwondo patterns are the learning ground for real combat. As such, every technique must display the requisite speed, power and firmness to be realistically used as an attack or defense move.
  • Spirit. A competitor's 'presence' on the mat must be as credible as his technique. Self belief, confidence in abilities, and intention to perform to a personal best are tangible virtues considered indispensable in Taekwondo practitioners.
  • Decorum. Proper manners must be displayed when interacting with the judges directly before and after the pattern. Respect must also be extended to rival competitors, clubs and other officials.
  • Form. General qualities that judges look for in any Taekwondo practitioner include proper breathing technique and body control. The diaphragm must be engaged in deep breathing, shallow breathing concentrated in the upper abdomen results in raised shoulders and stressed muscles. The muscles of the body should be lightly relaxed in order to perform the pattern with fluidity, speed and grace. Muscles should only be tensed at the moment of imaginary impact in order to commute maximum power to any individual Taekwondo technique.

Self defense

Taekwondo self-defense is known as hosinul and it forms one of the four main principles of the art. The self-defense applications would be difficult to score in sparring as they are designed primarily to cause injury or quickly incapacitate an adversary.
In competition, self-defense techniques take the format of a demonstration event, much like poomsae. One person is usually designated the part of the Taekwondo practitioner, while several team mates take the role of common street aggressors who attack from various angles with punches, kicks and grabs common to street brawlers. Weapons may also be used, as Taekwondo has specific techniques for dealing with armed adversaries.
Taekwondo self-defense competition provides an opportunity for students to display their understanding of Taekwondo self-defense applications and the ability to put together their own team choreography. Self-defense routines are often performed as displays for the public, in which case there are no judges present. Many Taekwondo clubs include self defense in their daily routine in both WTF and ITF.
There are two main concepts in Taekwondo self-defense. For real life combat situations, an experienced Taekwondo practitioner is versed in the following:
  • Linear (or hard) techniques
  • Circular (or soft) techniques
Linear Techniques
These include mostly punching, kicking, headbutts and other striking maneuvers. Force is countered with force and all limbs are involved in stopping an adversary. Taekwondo kicks have a wide reach that keeps the adversary at a distance. With proper execution opponents may be incapacitated with a single blow, which lessens the number of attacks in encounters with multiple people.
Circular techniques
These emphasize redirection and manipulation rather than strength. The adversary can be manipulated into a position whereby a lock, stranglehold and/or finishing move can be applied. Grappling techniques are used both as a means of securing an adversary and escaping from an adversary's grip. Soft self-defense techniques like the stranglehold or joint lock can be used to subdue the attacker, avoiding dealing permanent injury.
Taekwondo self-defense techniques demonstrated in competition may include:
  • Pressure point applications.[2] In Taekwondo philosophy, the body has many sensitive areas that are susceptible to precise attack. These are known as pressure points or ji ap sul. There are three types of pressure point that can induce one or a combination of the following: pain, paralysis, or death. These can be targeted with gripping and/or striking in order to immobilize or cause substantial pain to submit the opponent.
  • Throws. Known as too sul, Taekwondo practitioners can divert the opponent's force to their own advantage and throw him to the ground. Once on the ground the practitioner has greater control over his adversary and can follow up with subsequent controlling or finishing techniques.
  • Joint Locks. Otherwise known as kwan jyel sul in Taekwondo, these can be useful against armed attackers. Typically the attacking limb is grabbed and then manipulated to cause immense pain in the adversary. Joint locks can be applied on any joint in the body and are particularly useful for controlling an opponent who has been thrown to the ground.
  • Termination techniques. These are a range of strikes applied to an opponent downed by a previous throw or strike. Powerful downward traveling kicks and hand strikes are used to make sure the opponent stays down.
  • Choking techniques. In Chil sik sul, the idea of applying a stranglehold is to deprive the attacker's brain of either oxygenated blood through the carotid artery and/or oxygen for the lungs through the trachea. The Taekwondo practitioner uses leverage from his arm and sometimes involves the attackers clothing in applying pressure to the sensitive neck area. Choke holds are particularly dangerous and only taught to higher level Taekwondo students, as over exertion can crush the trachea or cause sudden death.
  • Freeing techniques. Paegi are taught to Taekwondo students so that they can quickly free themselves and neutralise the danger of being grabbed by an attacker. Competition demonstrations frequently involve one student grabbing another from behind. The science of Taekwondo is equally concerned with defense as attack so proper freeing techniques must be learnt.
Like other Taekwondo competition events, self-defense is marked by a panel of judges. When scoring they are looking at the following factors:
  • Aliveness. How realistic is the Taekwondo students demonstration? Does he move with the requisite urgency and do his techniques have the emotional content to make the judges believe in their power?
  • Technique. Are the Taekwondo techniques being demonstrated precisely? Are the kicks clean, fast and strong? Are joint locks and throws being performed accurately? Does the student have control over his adversaries or are they making it easy for him?
  • Variety. What is the range of the Taekwondo practitioners knowledge? Is he showing his understanding of liner and direct counter-attacks? Has he performed a practical finishing technique after each throw or lock?
  • Difficulty. More difficult Taekwondo techniques score higher than simple ones if performed correctly. However, a poorly executed technique will always score lower than a simple, effective technique performed well; students should not be demonstrating techniques that they have not mastered.

Breaking

Breaking, the discipline of destroying inanimate materials such as wooden boards, bats, ice or bricks is a feature common to several Asian martial arts. It can be seen in its oldest form within some branches of Chinese Kung Fu such as Iron Shirt Chi Gung, where iron bars are smashed off the bare heads of martial arts experts, typically Shaolin monks.
In Taekwondo breaking competitions, the idea is to demonstrate power, speed and technique. The preferred object is commonly wooden boards of varying thicknesses, advanced students break several boards stacked one on top of the other. In Taekwondo, the hardness of the object to be broken is usually subjugated to the difficulty of the technique to be employed. Thus various body parts are used, such as the ridge of the hand, the knuckles or even the fingertips. Headbutts, knee strikes, elbow strikes and various parts of the foot are also used to break boards. A single board or stack of boards may be broken or, alternatively, a series of boards may be broken in a pre-set sequence utilizing a variety of strikes. Advanced competitors may even break several boards in a single jump with multiple kicks before landing.
In ITF Taekwondo sparring competitions, using maximum force is not allowed. Furthermore, at advanced levels it would be seriously injurious and possibly fatal. Breaking boards or bricks is therefore the only safe way to test the real power of any martial arts technique (except with fairly high-tech scientific equipment). Taekwondo competition breaking may be roughly divided into two main categories:
  • Power breaking. The power of a technique is measured by breaking single or multiple stacked boards. Stacked boards are commonly placed on raised supports on the ground.
  • Speed breaking. A single board is held lightly between the fingertips of an assistant, at advanced levels the board is tossed into the air. Regardless of the power of a technique, if the board is not hit with the requisite speed in the correct places it will not break.
Starting with coloured belts Taekwondo students must learn breaking. As they progress through the ranks, the breaks they perform increase in difficulty as do the number of boards. As time goes on, the Taekwondo student's hands and bones become accustomed to breaking boards - repeated practice hardens bones, skin and tendons. Wolff's law states that the human skeleton will adapt to the stress it is put under, therefore the bones actually become stronger as a Taekwondo student advances in his martial arts career.

1 Pendiri, 2 Aliran

Taekwondo merupakan seni beladiri asal Korea hasil kombinasi dari beberapa seni beladiri tradisional negeri ginseng tersebut, antara lain taekyon dan karate shotokan. Saat ini Taekwondo menjadi salah satu seni beladiri populer di dunia dan di pertandingkan di olimpiade (versi atau aliran WTF).
Ada dua aliran besar dalam Taekwondo yang masing-masing dinaungi oleh dua organisasi dunia, yaitu World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) dan International Taekwondo Federation (ITF). Uniknya, kedua aliran ini secara fundamental pendirinya adalah satu orang, yakni Jenderal Choi Hong Hi.
Choi Hong Hi adalah salah seorang jenderal bintang dua di Korea Selatan yang dilahirkan di Hwa Dae, Myongchon (kini menjadi bagian Korea Utara). Sejak kecil ia mempelajari berbagai seni beladiri tradisional Korea, salah satunya Taekyon. Saat remaja ia bersekolah ke Jepang dan mempelajari Karate Shotokan di Dojo-nya Gichin Funakoshi hingga menyandang sabuk hitam DAN II.
Kembali ke Korea, Choi Hong Hi berkarir di militer. Karirnya terus melesat hingga berpangkat Mayor Jenderal. Atas kegemarannya pada seni beladiri Choi Hong Hi meramu teknik-teknik beladiri yang dikuasainya, termasuk karate shotokan hingga terciptalah beladiri yang dinamakannya Oh Dok Kwan. Sejumlah rekan menjadi murid pertama Choi.
Presiden Korea Selatan kala itu, Syngman Rhee, kemudian meminta Choi Hong Hi untuk menghimpun para ahli beladiri di negara tersebut. Tujuannya menciptakan satu metode pelatihan fisik dan beladiri bagi kalangan militer. Pada 1955 atau dua tahun pasca perang Korea Selatan dan Utara, lahirlah beladiri baru Tang So Do yang kemudian berganti menjadi Taekwondo (secara harfiah; jalan/seni tangan dan kaki).
Namun perhimpunan yang terdiri sembilan perguruan (kwan) itu tak bertahan lama karena ego masing-masing perguruan. Meski demikian Choi Hong Hi tetap meneruskan pengajaran Taekwondo yang awalnya hanya di kalangan militer.
Seiring perjalanan waktu, beladiri ini dipublikasikan hingga masyarakat umum bisa mempelajari. Meski sejak 1950-an terpecah menjadi dua negara, Korea Selatan dan Korea Utara, namun Taekwondo tetap dipelajari oleh masyarakat di kedua negara bersaudara itu. Pada 1966 di Seoul, Korea Selatan, didirikanlah International Taekwondo Federation (ITF).
Sayangnya, situasi politik yang kala itu tidak mendukung karir Choi Hong Hi di militer maupun pemerintahan membuatnya harus meninggalkan Korea Selatan. Konon, hijrahnya Choi bersama keluarga ke Kanada (1972) untuk menghindari ‘pembersihan’ sejumlah politisi termasuk petinggi militer yang dianggap tidak sepaham dengan pemerintah Korea Selatan yang telah direformasi. Hal ini mungkin berkait pula dengan asal muasal Cho Hong Hi yang desa kelahirannya kini masuk Korea Utara.
Di Kanada, Choi Hong Hi terus mengembangkan Taekwondo dengan organisasinya ITF. Setahun sepeninggal Jenderal Choi, pada 1973 pemerintah Korea Selatan mendirikan World Taekwondo Organisation (WTF), sebagai wadah Taekwondo di negara tersebut.

Jadilah Taekwondo menjadi dua organisasi yang secara teknik juga memiliki beberapa perbedaan. Seragam pun berbeda. Versi ITF mengenakan baju dengan kerah selempang seperti umumnya beladiri Jepang namun berikat di tengah perut, sedangkan WTF berdesain kerah seperti huruf V. Baju dan celana versi ITF berstrip/garis hitam di bagian sisi tangan dan sisi kaki.
Teknik tendangan tak jauh beda, hanya gerak dasar yang sedikit ada perbedaan. Dalam sistem pertandingan, WTF lebih mengarah pada olahraga murni sehingga full protector dan tidak tidak terlalu memberi ‘perhatian’ pada teknik pukulan. Sedangkan ITF hanya mengenakan hand glove dan foot protector, sementara dada dan perut tidak berpelindung demikian pula kepala tidak dilindungi helm. Karena minim protector, gaya fight ITF yang menggunakan kombinasi pukulan dan tendangan, lebih full contact dibanding WTF.
Kembali pada sang pendiri. Setelah 28 tahun bermukim di Kanada dan berhasil mengembangkan Taekwondo ITF ke sejumlah negara, pada tahun 2000 Choi Hong Hi memutuskan pulang ke Korea Utara yang notabene ‘negara’ kelahirannya. Dua tahun kemudian, pada 15 Juni 2002, Choi meninggal dunia di Pyongyang, akibat penyakit kanker.
Taekwondo ITF kini dipimpin oleh Choi Jung Hwa. Putra tunggal Choi Hong Hi tersebut menjabat presiden ITF sejak 2001.

Kicks (Chagi)



All kicks can be executed as jump kicks, spin kicks, jump spin kicks or multi-rotational spin kicks. Also, all can be performed by the front or rear leg in a given stance.
Some of the best-known Taekwondo kicks include:

Front Snap Kick (앞 차기 ap chagi): Ini adalah tendangan yang sangat linear. Praktisi mengangkat lutut ke pinggang, menarik kembali jari-jari kaki dan dengan cepat meluas kaki di target. Hal ini juga dikenal sebagai tendangan jepret. Tendangan depan adalah salah satu tendangan pertama dipelajari di TKD, jika menguasainya dapat menjadi salah satu yang paling kuat. Teknik ini lebih dimaksudkan untuk digunakan untuk mendorong penyerang pergi, tapi bisa melukai.

Hook Kick (후려 차기 huryeo chagi): Sebuah tendangan kurang populer tradisional, telah mendapat kasih karunia peningkatan kompetisi modern. Praktisi meningkatkan lutut dengan cara yang sama dengan tendangan bangsal lokomotif, kemudian meluas kaki ke luar kemudian terkunci di sekitar busur dorsal, dengan tumit sebagai senjata mencolok dimaksud.

Axe Kick/Downward kick (내려 차기 naeryeo chagi): Lain tendangan yang telah meningkat dalam popularitas karena kompetisi perdebatan. Kaki dinaikkan biasanya dari luar tubuh seperti tendangan sabit luar. maka kaki ditarik ke bawah dengan tumit menunjuk ke bawah. Program Latihan Fisik Untuk Atlet Taekwondo in



Di Taekwondo ada 3 faktor penentu kemenangan. Teknik, Mental, dan Fisik. Percuma teknik dan mental bagus, tapi fisiknya amburadul. Banyak yang disebut atlet babak penyisihan. Mental dan Teknik mengantarkan dia menyodok di babak penyisihan. Karena fisik jelek, akhirnya dia loyo saat maju ke partai berikutnya. Masih untung gak di knock out.

Meski latihan fisik diperlukan, tapi melatih fisik pun tidak bias sembarangan. Salah melatih fisik pun jadi tidak berguna. Misalnya mencetak badan segede Ade Ray. Oke sih, tapi tidak sesuai untuk atlet taekwondoin.

Di sini saya akan uraikan beberapa program latihan fisik untuk para atlet taekwondo :
1. Pola makan
Pola makan menentukan kebugaran para atlet. Jam makan harus tepat. Makan malam tidak boleh lebih dari jam 7 malam, karena akan menjadi lemak. Atlet boleh makan hingga 5 kali dalam sehari, toh semua kalori terbakar dengan menjalani olahraga teratur. Jangan lupa untuk mengkonsumsi vitamin c, karena vitamin ini tidak diproduksi oleh tubuh.

2. Kelincahan

Latihan ini sebaiknya dilakukan secara teratur. Waktunya 6 kali dalam seminggu. Program latihannya dengan melakukan skipping dengan variasi gaya lompatan, standarnya seratus kali tanpa putus lalu istirahat sebentar, lalu lanjutkan lagi.

3. Kecepatan

Gerak dilatih dengan sprint 100 meter, jangan lupa dihitung time nya. Usahakan ada peningkatan waktu tempuh. Bila hari ini mampu 17 detik, hari berikutnya harus mampu 16 detik, dan seterusnya. Latihan ini akan menunjang speed kamu dalam menendang dan reflek kamu.

4. Daya tahan otot

Tujuan utama dalam berlatih adalah melatih daya tahan otot, bukan membesarkan otot. Bagi atlet dibawah 17 tahun dilakukan dengan push up, standarnya adalah 25 kali. Lalu istirahat 1 menit, kemudian dilanjutkan 25 kali lagi dan seterusnya. Intinya bukan berapa banyak push up yang kita hasilkan dalam satu hari, tetapi seberapa lama kita istirahat saat melakukan push up yang pertama ke push up yang kedua, ketiga, dst. Percuma kita push up sampai 1000 kali, tapi metodenya dicicil pagi siang, malam. Lebih baik Cuma seratus kali tapi dilakukan dengan 4 kali istirahat dalam waktu 1 menit.
Sit up dan back up pun sama dengan uraian di atas.

SEKILAS SEJARAH TAE KWON-DO

Tae kwon-do merupakan salah satu cabang seni olahraga bela diri yang berasal dari Korea Selatan.
Makna dari Taekwondo mempunyai arti yaitu :
Tae = kaki
Kwon = pukulan dengan tangan/tinju
Do  = sistem/cara/seni
Arti kesuluruhan Taekwondo adalah : seni beladiri yang menggunakan kaki dan tangan sebagai senjata beladiri untuk menaklukan lawannya.
Menurut sejarah Tae kwon-do berkembang sejak tahun 37M. Pada masa dinasti Kogooryo di Korea. Masyarakat menyebutnya dengan nama berbeda, yaitu Subak, Taekkyon, taeyon. Tae kwon-do kerap dijadikan pertunjukan acara ritual yang dilakukan oleh bangsa Korea, bela diri Tae kwon-do menjadi senjata bela diri andalan para ksatria. Sejarah panjang Korea pada dinasti Chosun kuno, kerajaan Shila, dan dinasti Koryo pada masa kejayaannya.
Pada saat Korea merdeka pada tahun 1945 rakyat Korea berusaha mengembangkan Taekwondo yang merupakan seni bela diri tradisional Korea, sehingga Taekwondo diterima dan berkembang pesat diseluruh dunia.
WTF adalah suatu badan Federasi Taekwondo Dunia yang resmi berdiri pada tanggal 28 Mei 1973 sebagai Presiden adalah Kim Un Yong bermarkas di Kukkiwon (Seoul) Korea Selatan. WTF program resmi pertahanan nasional kalangan Polisi dan tentara. WTF beranggotakan lebih dari 186 negara
Kejuaraan Dunia pertama kali diadakan oleh WTF pada tanggal 25-27 Mei 1973 di Seoul diikuti oleh 18 Negara.
Tae kwon-do aliran WTF berkembang di Indonesia pada tahun 1975 yang membawa aliran ini adalah Mauritsz Dominggus yang datang ke Indonesia pada tahun 1972 di Tanjung Priok, Jakarta Utara
Pada saat itu Tae kwon-do di Indonesia belum berkembang karena Bela Diri karate lebih dulu hadir di Indonesia seperti aliran Karate Shindoka beberapa pelatih diantaranya : Simon Kaihena – Jopi Yan Rainong – Hady Sugianto – William Giritz – Sukanda – Hasan Johan – Hendry Sanuri (Alm) - Drs. Rosid M. Siregar (Alm) – Mujiman (Alm) dan Harry Tomotala(Perguruan Karate PERKINO). Mereka tersebut bergabung dengan Mauritsz Dominggus berasal dari Ambon yang merupakan pemegang sabuk hitam Taekwondo yang belajar di Belanda dan membentuk perguruan dengan nama KATAEDO. Gabungan kata karate dan Tae kwon-do.
Pada tanggal 15 Juli 1974 atas saran Prof. Kim Ki Ha (Ketua Asosiasi Korea di Indonesia) KATAEDO di ganti nama Institut Tae kwon-do Indonesia (INTIDO). Pada saat itu Prof.Kim Ki Ha sebagai penasehat INTIDO dan atas saran beliaulah INTIDO dipertemukan dengan Duta Besar Korea Selatan dan beliau diutus ke Korea Selatan mengikuti sidang umum II WTF pada tanggal 27 Agustus 1975. Dan Prof.Kim Ki Ha memperjuangkan INTIDO untuk dapat diterima sebagai anggota WTF dan persyaratan WTF supaya INTIDO dirubah menjadi Federasi Taekwondo Indonesia (FTI) sebagai ketua umum Marsekal Muda (TNI) Sugiri.
Pada tanggal 17 juni 1976 FTI resmi menjadi anggota WTF ditandatangani oleh presiden WTF Kim Un Yong.
Pada tahun 1976 Indonesia mendatangkan pelatih dari Korea Selatan dalam rangka program peningkatan mutu dan prestasi Tae kwon-do Indonesia bernama Kim yeong Tae Dan V. Mantan juara kelas berat.
Seiring dengan berkembangnya Taekwondo di Indonesia ada 2 organisasi Taekwondo yaitu FTI (Federasi Taekwondo Indonesia) yang dipimpin oleh Marsekal Muda Sugiri dan PTI(Persatuan Taekwondo Indonesia) dipimpin oleh Leo Lapulisa.
FTI dan PTI pada tanggal 28 Maret 1981 menggelar sebuah pertemuan yang bertajuk MUSYARAH NASIONAL I, demi kemajuan Tae kwon-do Indonesia. MUNAS I tersebut melahirkan kesepakatan bersama untuk menyatukan kedua Organisasi tersebut ke dalam sebuah Organisasi Taekwondo yang sekarang kita kenal Pengurus Besar Taekwondo Indonesia(PBTI) yang diakui oleh WTF dan KONI, sebagai ketua umumnya Bapak Sarwo Edhie Wibowo dengan pelindung langsung dari ketua KONI Pusat Bapak Surono.

Pada tanggal 17 – 18 September 1984 sebagai Ketua umum Munas :

Tae Kwon-do sebagai cabang olah raga resmi di arena PON Ke XI tahun 1985 diselenggarakan di Jakarta
Tae kwon-do dipertandingkan di olimpiade tahun 1992 di Barcelona Spanyol sifatnya ekchibisi dan resminya sendiri pertama kalinya pada olimpiade di Atlanta AS tahun 1996.
Indonesia turut ambil bagian dalam pertandingan eksebisi, dan membawa pulang 4 buah medali, 3 perak, 1 perunggu.

TEKNIK DASAR TAEKWONDO

Tiga materi dalam latihan

  1. Poomsae atau rangkaian jurus adalah rangkaian teknik gerakan dasar serangan dan pertahanan diri, yang dilakukan melawan lawan yang imajiner, dengan mengikuti diagram tertentu. Setiap diagram rangkaian gerakan poomse didasari oleh filosofi timur yang menggambarkan semangat dan cara pandang bangsa Korea.
  2. Kyukpa atau teknik pemecahan benda keras adalah latihan teknik dengan memakai sasaran/obyek benda mati, untuk mengukur kemampuan dan ketepatan tekniknya. Obyek sasaran yang biasanya dipakai antara lain papan kayu, batu bata, genting, dan lain-lain. Teknik tersebut dilakukan dengan tendangan, pukulan, sabetan, bahkan tusukan jari tangan.
  3. Kyoruki atau pertarungan adalah latihan yang mengaplikasikan teknik gerakan dasar atau poomse, dimana dua orang yang bertarung saling mempraktekkan teknik serangan dan teknik pertahanan diri.

 Filosofi sabuk pada Tae Kwon Do

  • Putih melambangkan kesucian, awal/dasar dari semua warna, permulaan. Di sini para taekwondoin mempelajari jurus dasar (gibon) 1
  • Kuning melambangkan bumi,disinilah mulai ditanamkan dasar-dasar TKD dengan kuat.Mempelajari gibon 2 dan 3. Sebelum naik sabuk hijau biasanya naik ke sabuk kuning strip hijau terlebih dahulu.
  • Hijau melambangkan hijaunya pepohonan, pada saat inilah dasar TKD mulai ditumbuhkembangkan.(mempelajari taeguk 2). Sebelum naik ke sabuk biru biasanya naik ke sabuk hijau strip biru terlebih dahulu.
  • Biru melambangkan birunya langit yang menyelimuti bumi dan seisinya,memberi arti bahwa kita harus mulai mengetahui apa yang telah kita pelajari.(mempelajari taeguk 4). Sebelum naik sabuk merah biasanya naik ke sabuk biru strip merah terlebih dahulu.
  • Merah melambangkan matahari artinya bahwa kita mulai menjadi pedoman bagi orang lain dan mengingatkan harus dapat mengontrol setiap sikap dan tindakan kita.(mempelajari taeguk 6). Sebelum naik sabuk hitam, biasanya naik ke sabuk merah strip dua dan merah strip satu dahulu. Maksud dari matahari adalah tingkaran di mana seorang sabuk merah memberi kehangatan atau dalam arti denotasi mulai memberi ilmu atau bimbingan.
  • Hitam melambangkan akhir, kedalaman, kematangan dalam berlatih dan penguasaan diri kita dari takut dan kegelapan. Hitam memiliki tahapan dari Dan 1 hingga Dan 9. Juga melambangkan alam semesta.

  • Yeop Jireugi = Pukulan Samping
  • Chi Jireugi = Pukulan Dari Bawah Keatas
  • Dolryeo Jireugi = Pukulan Mengait
  • Pyojeok Jireugi = Pukulan dengan Sasaran
  • Momtong Jireugi = Pukulan Mengarah ke Tengah (Pukulan Mengarah ke Ulu Hati)
  • Are Jireugi = Pukulan ke bawah
  • Oreon Jireugi = Pukulan Dengan Tangan Kanan Yang Dilakukan Sambil Menendang (ap chagi)
  • Eolgol Jireugi = Pukulan ke Atas (Pukulan Mengarah ke Kepala)
  • Hengek = Menunduk
  • Ap Joonbi = Siap
  • Tumbuh Jireugi = Tumbuh Noh

 Tendangan

  • Ap Chagi = Tendangan depan ke arah perut menggunakan kaki depan
  • Dollyo Chagi = Tendangan dari arah samping
  • Yeop Chagi = Tendangan samping menggunakan pisau kaki
  • Dwi Chagi = Tendangan belakang
  • Twieo Dwi Chagi = Tendangan belakang yang dilakukan sambil melompat
  • Twieo Yeop Chagi = Tendangan samping yang dilakukan sambil melompat
  • Goley/nare chagi = Tendangan ganda
  • Sip Chagi An Chagi = Tendangan yang dilakukan sambil melompat dan tangkisan aremaki
  • Penriyti Chagi = Tendangan keliling.
  • Dwi Hurigi = Tendangan berputar melalui belakang.
  • Del'o chigi = Tendangan mencangkul ke arah kepala menggunakan tumit

 Tangkisan

  • Aremagi = Tangkisan ke arah bawah untuk menangkis tendangan
  • Eolgol Ceceumaki = Tangkisan ke arah kepala
  • Bakat Momtong Bakat Magi = Tangkisan dari arah dalam menggunakan bagian dalam lengan bawah.
  • Bakat Momtong An Magi = Tangkisan dari arah dalam menggunakan bagian luar lengan bawah.
  • An Magi = tangkisan dari arah luar.
  • Bina Magi an magi = tangkisan yang dimulai dari lengan bawah dan saat masuk ke dalam harus melalui lengan atas.
  • An palmok montong bakat magi = tangkisan ke arah lengan bawah

Program Latihan Teknik untuk Atlet Taekwondo



Dalam program teknik tendangan dasar ini dipaparkan bagaimana cara membentuk pola tendangan kita agar menghasilkan suatu gerakan yang ideal, dan membantu para Taekwondoin pemula untuk belajar tendangan dasar.

1. Momtong Dollyo Chagi/Roundhouse Kick



- Tempelkan paha di dinding, arah pandangan mata ke samping, tumpuan diusahakan merapat ke dinding.












- Ayunkan kaki perlahan (tidak usah memakai power.












- Lalu tarik kembali ke posisi semula

- Lakukan ini berulang-ulang, untuk arah ke kanan juga sama

- Standarnya kiri 50 kali, kanan 45 kali, usahakan kaki kiri lebih banyak dari kaki kanan

- Jika kamu kidal, kanan lebih banyak dari yang kiri.



2. Eolgol Ap Chagi/Front Kick/Tendangan ke arah depan atas


- Atur jarak sedekat mungkin dengan dinding













- Mulai mengangkat kaki, usahakan lutut sedekat mungkin dengan dinding.












- Angkat kaki (dengan power) jangan sampai kaki menyentuh dinding.

- Lakukan berulang kali, intinya kaki kiri harus lebih banyak dari kaki kanan, kalau kamu kidal maka sebaliknya.




3. Dwichagi/Back Kick

- Tumpuan kaki diusahakan dekat dengan dinding

- Arah pandangan mata ke ujung kaki yang akan diayun











- Ayunkan kaki (tidak usah memakai power)

- Ingat, pandangan mata pada ujung kaki












- Lalu kembali ke posisi semula.









4. Yeop Chagi/Side Kick/Tendangan ke samping

- Lutut sedekat mungkin dengan dinding

- Arah pandangan mata ke ujung kaki

- Posisi telapak kaki menggunakan pisau kaki











- Sentakkan tendangan dengan power












- Lalu tarik ke posisi semula.










Jumlah tendangan kiri harus lebih banyak dari yang kanan, kalau kamu kidal, maka tendangan kanan harus lebih banyak dari yang kir
